
Urban Interior presented its 2009 research projects, exhibitions and colloquium, at the Customizing Space annual meeting at RMIT's Design Research Institute.
At the 2nd Intern. Conference on Architecture and Phenomenology at Kyoto Seika University, Malte Wagenfeld will present a paper.
UI holds together with the Architecture Design Innovation Program (ADIP) at TU Berlin a Colloquium on Thursday, June 25. The colloquium will take place in the Kubus (by Volksbuehne) on Rosa Luxemburg Platz. The Kubus is a temporary public interior with an open space program, and is designed by the stage set designer Bert Neumann, from Volksbuehne Berlin. Three members of the research group, Suzie Attiwill, Mick Douglas and Rochus Urban Hinkel will present their recent projects. Out of a number of external guests, Dr Hélène Frichot (RMIT), Alex Schweder (Artist) and Mathias Heyden (TU Berlin) will give a presentation of their current research. In addition RMIT interior design students will present their ‘occupation’ project, led by Suzie Attiwill, and ADIP students will present some projects out of the Urban Occupation design studio at the TU Berlin, led by Rochus Urban Hinkel and Dr Hélène Frichot.

OCCUPATION BRIGHTON
Monday 29 June to Saturday 4 July 2009. A week in Brighton involving participation in the Occupation. Negotiations with Constructed Space conference and student occupation/workshop. Hosted by the Interior Architecture and Urban Studies Programme in the School of Architecture and Design, University of Brighton. The conference and workshop will explore ways that buildings and places are used or occupied. The student occupation precedes the conference and begins on Monday 29 June leading into and contributing to the conference which will take place on Thursday 2 July to Saturday 4 July. It will consist of a series of workshops led by design tutors and practitioners from various institutions, both nationally and internationally. The workshops will be concerned with the occupation of spaces in and around Brighton. OCCUPATION MELBOURNE
Monday 20 July to Saturday 26 July 2009. A week in Melbourne during which the Occupations will be exhibited. A colloquium will be held for discussions and reflection on what happened - scheduled for 26 July. The exhibition and colloquium will be part of Urban Interior’s State of Design Festival Occupation and the Urban [Di]Versions project conducted by Urban Interior members Kate Church, Malte Wagenfeld and Roger Kemp.
On April 17 2009, Rochus Hinkel was invited to the inaugural symposium of the AEDES NETWORK CAMPUS BERLIN. The symposium brought together ambassadors from some of the world’s leading universities to discuss the symposium theme: “Educating The Global Architect”.
The 3rd International Conference on Design Principles and Practices, held between 15.02.09 and 17.02.09 at the UdK Berlin, is a place to explore the meaning and purpose of 'design'. Rochus Urban Hinkel will present a paper on Ephemeral Urban Design. http://g09.cg-conference.com/

Urban Interior is a creative research group based at RMIT University. In September it will occupy Craft Victoria, Flinders Lane gallery spaces and surroundings and create a research laboratory to explore the spatial and temporal dimensions of the inhabited, urban environment. Urban Interior will be exploring exhibition as medium of research through a number of parallel events and installations at Craft Victoria. In addition international and national guests will discuss the research projects with UI at our annual symposium during the exhibition period. The University of Technology of Papua New Guinea in Lae, Department of Architecture and Building (DOAB), has invited Rochus Urban Hinkel for the annual international conference on bamboo, which is accompanied by a master class. Rochus is collaborating with Dr. Xiaodong Huang from the School of Civil, Environmental and Chemical Engineering. An installation at the State of Design Festival in July 2008, entitled HAVE YOU SEEN IT, is a collaboration between Rochus Urban Hinkel from UI, Laurene Vaughan from Communication Design and Hélène Frichot from Architecture. The installation will be located in the urban fabric of the 4 city blocks around the intersection of La Trobe St and Swanston St in Melbourne’s CBD. The International Association for Literature and Philosophy conference 'Global Arts, Local Knowledge' will be held in Melbourne at RMIT University and LaTrobe University. UI has composed a panel 'Urban Interior – relations between people and the urban condition', with Robyn Healy as chair and presentations from Mick Douglas, Rochus Urban Hinkel, Michael Fowler, Lawrence Harvey, Mick Peel and Malte Wagenfeld.

Rochus Urban Hinkel will present a keynote at the Architecture Design Innovation Program (ADIP) at the TU Berlin, following an invitation from Prof J.-P. Vassal. The lecture is entitled Urban Ephemeral Event. At this occasion Rochus will also discuss collaborative research projects between UI and ADIP.
The research project 'Relationships between urban typologies and urban sociologies', undertaken by Rochus Urban Hinkel, (interior design and {UI}), Laurene Vaughan (communication design), Helene Frichot (architecture) with Ashley Perrey (Phd candidate applied communication) and Michael Spooner (Phd candidate architecture) has received funding from the Design Research Institute in the first round of Seeding Funds.
The UI: 2007 Colloquium Publication has been published and will be disseminated to the participants. This publication is the result of the discussion from the colloquium held 5 October 2007. The publication consists of a set of cards that act as a creative tool. Not only is the publication a reminder of the day's discussion, but also as a device to create new relationships between the research themes of Urban Interior.
This is the first in a proposed annual colloquia convened by the RMIT School of Architecture and Design's research group, Urban Interior. Each UI member has recommended someone external to the University whose area of expertise is aligned with their research. It is an opportunity for UI members to present current research and engage this research in discussion with invited guests with a view to testing ideas and incubating potential, collaborative research projects.
