Consume People was brought into existence at the end-of-semester studio exhibition. We played the literal role of Florists for Public Toilets in the building’s facilities.

We made the toilets nice to ‘consume’ with floral arrangements. We advertised users of the toilets as making themselves ‘consumable’ with a hidden camera aimed at the mirror in the sink area of the toilets, images from which were projected onto the ceiling of the main exhibition area. We wanted to highlight the fact that people don’t fix themselves up if they’re at home by themselves, they only lay on this ‘self-advertisement’ of preening and makeup when they know if will be consumed by others.

We suggest to you that if we, as a society, are going to consume everything, we should take this to its logical end and consume people. Does this mean we will consume them like products? Will we treat partners like we ‘own’ them? (Don’t we already?) Will we throw people away and replace them with new ones just to keep our lives interesting? Did you ‘buy’ your current friends just because they were the first thing you saw when you walked into the shop and you couldn’t be bothered to look further? And just how much are you worth? One way of pricing people is to consider they’re only worth as much as their last major purchase. We did this at the exhibition and found some people to be worth exhorbitant amounts (they’d just bought houses), while others were stumped to think of any big purchases and named the beers they’d just bought. Since it’s stocktaking time right now, some people were heavily reduced from their original prices. Sigh. It’s just a fact of life in a consumer society that you’re not worth as much today as you were last week.

We were asked to build a homeless shelter at uni, using materials we found onsite. After pulling masses of plastic bags out of a skip in Bowen Lane we lay down on them and were having a chat while we looked up at the stars. It was pretty comfy and we started talking about the merits of our location, despite being “homeless”. We talked about housing of the future, where the need to reduce consumption might result in the “working homeless” person, who might have a full-time job and live in makeshift accommodation by choice. They would save money on rent and utilities, make much less impact on the environment, have access to communal facilities (much more economical than everyone owning one of everything), and take advantage of great location. When we came to building the shelter we questioned whether all we were going to consider was how to construct it. People were watching us build the shelter but not interacting with us, and we came up with the idea of looking for a housemate. Since we were looking at real issues, it seemed fitting to advertise the room as a real one. So we used established communication methods for advertising a sharehouse – Gumtree and noticeboard ads around uni.

We were going to host a housewarming party with anyone who came to the advertised viewing, but the ads didn’t go up in time for anyone to come.

We were afraid if people had come they would have been pretty angry with us. Someone later pointed out that if several desperate househunters had turned up, we might have provided the opportunity for them to meet and start their own sharehouse together. This shows how our thinking about the issues to do with housing and research-through-design could have provided an unexpected design solution to real housing problems.

Concept

The basic framework behind the drive of my exploration this semester was to encourage people to look up. Through investigation on the general public i noticed the world is downward driven. I embarked to change this and build another direction, and the simplest form of direction is the arrow, leading the eye to where it points. my challenge was to catch the eye at a lower level, and bring peoples awareness up. “Arrow Away” and “Catch Me If You Can” are two of my projects that involved participation from the general public. There is a world up there not noticed by the average commuter and i took it upon myself to open that to everyone.

Concept Execution

The idea is to let the public invade my space without the risk of being turned away as well as making others / the public aware of the tangible space or boundaries of personal space that surrounds us.

What is Personal Boundaries?

Personal boundaries are limits or borders that define where you end and others begin. Your personal boundary is defined by the amount of physical and emotional space you allow between yourself and others. Personal boundaries also help you decide what types of communication, behavior and interaction you accept from others. The type of boundaries you set defines whether you have healthy or unhealthy relationships. there are 2 types of boundaries which is emotional and physical. examples of physical boundary invasions :

Standing too close to others and invading their personal space.
Inappropriate touching.

Not allowing others their personal space.

An example would be barging into your boss’s office without knocking.

Design Process & Investigation

The idea began from the very first project that we did which was the encounter project where i have to approach random strangers and start a conversation with them which was very uncomfortable for me to do so because of my shyness of talking to strangers and have long conversations with them. i discovered by overcoming this fear i came up with the idea of creating a personal space in public and develop a relationship with the public. Since a personal space cant be seen although tangible, i decided to investigate the personal boundaries of an individual by invading his/her space.

Portfolio

My portfolio is a collection of all my design ideas and the technologies that come with it, including my process ideas and the execution of every project in this design studio. The chapters of this portfolio will inform you about the journey I have been undertaken for this semester and how that leads to my final project.

Concept

Using animated posters and speech bubbles as my communication tool, I placed them near, beside and on top of other posters, ads and street art. They invited the passersby to fill in the blanks with their own thoughts and imagination. The more posters and bubbles I put up meant more interaction with the community, more shared thoughts, more reactions to current events, and more imagination and fun.

The city of Brunswick was where the project was carried out, focusing mainly on Sydney Road.

I have nothing against ads, posters or street art, although I do have something against adds which take up public spaces, so I targeted them. I like street art, and have nothing against it in a public space, as long as it’s not too offensive, so I never posted over the actually piece itself. Just next to it.

Concept:

Recycled Gardens is a process that forms a community through the use of visual contrast and curiosity, making connections through a analog site and digital site as well as its members, building relationships and common interest. Exploring the available uses on the digital site and the physical site ‘State library and Melbourne Central’, using newspaper to make a contrast of actual rubbish and aesthetics forms of what newspaper can be. The physical site is connected through the digital site a ‘Facebook group’ called ‘Recycled Gardens’. This group is a collective documentation and mapping of events that occurs in the physical site and digital site that becomes an ongoing development of conversations. To create a ongoing cycled of events through its members to create change and involvement of the community.

Facebook site: http://groups.to/recycledgarden/

The ‘Facebook Group’ is a mapping, documentation, link to all existing evidential movement of its members and curious passer- by’s. The facebook group works as a basis where people are able to share thoughts, ideas and interests. They are able to connect and communicate with each other and become friends, build personal relationships, making coincidental occurrences on analog site, ‘State Library’, this all becomes the starting point of a series of ongoing conversations between the general public on the Facebook site. As well as the use of connecting to different online sites such as, youtube.com people who have an interest in the videos, improveverywhere.ning.com is a online community who make public scene, and from linking from pass experiments http://groups.to/1000curiouscats to inform all its member about ‘Recycled Gardens’. The intention is to generate traffic and interested members to join. The people who are members of Facebook range from different privacy settings of their personal choice, by becoming a member of ‘Recycled Gardens’, the members are able to connect and browse as much information a person is willing to share. As this project draws near the end, it can still be continued by making members of the group ‘admins’ giving the members the option and power to create events and to continue this project on by the community that’s been formed by the ‘Facebook Group’.

To further your knowledge about this project also learn how to make origami. Just print a copy of the portfolio below in A3, and following the instructions to make your very own flower booklet.

Our context and space of investigation was the public space within locations in and near the city. Within this studio we undertook different actions in Brunswick, CBD (Chinatown) and Carlton Gardens. Some of the key ideas we looked at was activating public imagination through play and creating a disturbance through an installation in order to understand the potential of the space. We investigated the importance of building relationships between people through atmosphere. We wanted to create a situation where we could test the interaction and reaction of the people to the change of environment in a public space.

This project is based around the subject of Interior Urban Activism. The experiments have been undertaken to investigate people in public space and their relationship to each other, site and to myself.

The main focus of the experiments i have conducted progressed to the exploration of interacting with the public in public space. I used a range of methods to engage with the public to try and create a relationship between them and myself. I experimented with a range of techniques to gain the publics attention within the suburb of Brunswick, Melbourne. The outcome of my experiments has lead to a greater knowledge on the area, taught by the people who inhabit it. By learning from the publics memories and personal knowledge i have gained a unique understanding of the Brunswick area.

This is a portfolio that communicates my progress over the past 4 months of investigating Interior Urban Activism.

In the public space people are usually to self-conscious to notice there surroundings. They are more cautious. But they are curious because it is in their nature.

The sand pit relates to the memories of spending time together with family at the beach. The installation used the idea of touch and the salty smell of the sand. The idea is to play and create sculpture in the connection with memories of the inhabitant. Draw what they are thinking at the time can reflect what they did as a child.

Another point that I get from this project are, “The sand and tree without the toys are just a public property; but with putting the toys, it made the public space become more private.”

But we can not say that the site represent a sand pit. Only if there is a connetion between people and the public space, the space become a representation of ‘Life’. Life between people and the site.

2. whishing tree – japanesse notes prayer..

The memories of this notes prayers itself is actually related back to my memory. When I travel to Japan, I saw this notes in the temples. The memories also built by the people who wrote and tied the wishes and built the artwork. By writing what they wish, touching the paper and tied it on the string that hang on the tree. The connection between people and the space when they make the space.

PROJECT OUTLINE

During the semester of Urban Interior Activism, we explored many ways of public interaction with public space and the public. Through these investigations I observed the public and how public space works. I made a lot of discoveries, and found I was interested in the many layers in public space as I discovered through my observations. I came up with the concept of ‘the seat’. Through my observations in public space, i noticed that many people on the same day, though out the day sit in the same particular place. I found that in these particular places there was a cycle of life, such a on a bench seat, where people came and left and were replaced by others. My concept developed through the thought of having the person that sits on the seat has no idea of who was seated before or will be seated after, what they were doing, what they were thinking etc. This concept revealed that layers in public space I became interested in. By using my methods of communication, I tried to connect and encounter with the public and found that through the many methods that poster method were the most successful. The idea of leaving these posters around as a communication platform was to encourage the public to gain some sort of a personal memory of this transitional public space and make it an experience which they can relate to.
